Lost, “Not in Portland” (3×7)

Note: For the purposes of this blog, a “Review” indicates that I have seen the episode already, and therefore there shall be no such thing as spoilers. Be warned once now and forevermore.
You had me at “Previously.” I don’t expect this episode to put the kibbosh to the Lost backlash, but overall I thought this was a fabulous comeback ep. The one thing I could do without in this episode is Elizabeth Mitchell’s face. I know that seems harsh, but she doesn’t seem to know what sort of emotion she is supposed to provide in a given scene. There was a moment in her confrontation with her ex (Zeljko Ivanek) where she turned back to him with a giggly smile like she was in on some joke. And then she is one of those actors who when she wants to look tough she just lets her face go limp, and it just doesn’t work for me.
Another thing I could do without was the sensory overload torture room! But in a good way. I am having a daymare about it as I write. That was just the right insanely weird touch for this episode, to remind us that they are still capable of fucking with us. Yes, I used the f-word on the internet. They did that again with the bus that took out Juliet’s ex, which seems to have led to her showing up on the island. Speaking of actors faces, how clutch is William Mapother’s face? That guy will enjoy some great work as the ubercreepy bad guy from now on. (Side note: is he related to Tom Cruise?)
Mysteries revealed: Juliet is on the island because she can magically make women pregnant. Was she there for somebody specific? Also that Ben is Alex’s father. Is that literal or anecdotal? If that is the case, why didn’t the French woman tell the Losties when she captured him? I know this guy is a bad dude because he’s my baby daddy, y’all! Does she not know? I can’t even remember if I knew that, because of the 3 friggen months since I last saw this show. Okay, there’s that backlash again. Tune in next week.

I love that my TiVo still thinks that this show stars Naveen Andrews, Emilie De Ravin, Michael Emerson, and Jorge Garcia.
