Girl Night 2/13/07

New BLUE MAG, new Don Zacharias. Against my better judgment I’m going to go ahead and tell you that one of my favorite shows over the last few years has been “Gilmore Girls.” I’m sure there has to be one or two other men out there who have watched and enjoyed this show. If you’re out there, email me offline and we can band together. To go off in search of our testicles. Badda bing!
But seriously, if you were never forced to watch this by you lady friend then you wouldn’t have had the pleasure of getting hooked on it after a few episodes and it’s not on you radar now, in what will probably be its final season (mere speculation on my part). You’re probably more likely to be a fan of its Tuesday companion on The CW, the excellent “Veronica Mars.”
Well, for at least the rest of this season I’m going to go ahead and do companion recaps/reviews of these shows, in what amounts to “Girl Night” in the Zacharias house.
Gilmore Girls, “Farewell, My Pet” (7×14)
Now I’m speaking mostly to fans. I have not been one to judge the writing since the Palladinos jumped ship. Last night was a great example of the fine writing that has been accomplished by the show’s current helmer, David S. Rosenthal. Yes, I say helmer now too. A fantastic scene between Lorelai and Christopher, one that has been simmering very nicely in the background for months. It is a crime of high degree that Lorelai Gilmore will not go down as one of the greatest TV characters ever mostly because this show started and will finish on a third-tier network. Lauren Graham’s work over 7 seasons has been fantastic, and this is a very solid and consistent character. I have to say, my original assumption was that Christopher would make a play to get Lorelai to move away from her podunk village with him while Luke was making a play to keep his daughter in same podunk village, finally showing Lorelai everyone’s true colors and with whom she was more in sync. I personally think this season is gearing up very well for the finish, surpassing mine and everybody else’s assumptions.
However, if Lauren Graham was displeased with the writing last season in which Lorelai weakly gave Luke an ultimatum to marry her or else, how can she be pleased with the way the Christopher-Lorelai arc this season has turned out? The problems between her and Christopher are all his fault, and the way it will end between them seems to involve her taking all the blame for carrying a torch for Luke. For shame.
