A “Winner” it’s not

The best thing that can be said about Fox’s new sitcom “The Winner,” the Seth MacFarlane created comedy starring Rob Corddry of “The Daily Show” fame, is that Rob Corddry is a very funny human being. As much as I wanted “The Winner” to work, it simply does not.
Corddry stars as Glen Abbott, a 32-year old living at home with his parents (where the hell did half of Lenny Clarke go?). The conceit is that Glen is “starting his adolescence” at age 32 in 1994 (when the show takes place) and narrating the show from the current day in which he is the richest man in his hometown. Corddry’s unique delivery and acting are very fun to watch, but the show is horribly slow with very few laughs.
The supporting cast does not offer much to work with. Building on the conceit, the “buddy” character is 13 years old, the son of Glen’s amorous target. There needs to be 3 or 4 other 30-something friend characters who can at the very least play up on 1994 humor.
It seems obvious that this show won’t last, but don’t bother to give it a shot in the meantime.
