Emmy surprises amid the mess

Well, what did we all think of the Emmys?
- I guess I never realized it, but that was Conan’s first Emmy. Yay Conan.
- Terry O’Quinn’s Emmy over T.R. Knight, Shatner and Hiro kicks ass. Jeremy Piven’s Emmy over Rainn Wilson doesn’t kick ass, although I guess begrudgingly, looking at that list, Piven is probably close to the most outstanding actor of the bunch most of the time. Not the funniest, but that’s not the category.
- I had forgotten to take into account the “Boston Legal” factor. Namely, that the show is still on and wins lots of Emmys. It was deja vu all over again, last time Spader won I was like whaa? guh? huzzawha? and that’s how it felt last night. Seriously, has anyone every watched this show? I cannot believe he won over Tony Soprano’s final attempt. Gah.
- I think it’s great that Ricky Gervais won, and it’s too bad he wasn’t there to take home his Emmy. I’m trying to figure out whether I think that little bit with Carell, Colbert and Stewart was funny or lame. Funnylame?
- Ugly Betty’s actress win was as predicted. I suppose she does some good acting, although I cannot watch the show. Yes for lack of trying. Sally Field’s win is as predicted as well, and well deserved.
- Holy crap, “30 Rock.” I only hope that this doesn’t become the “Arrested Development” curse. I’m pretty sure that’s unpossible given that NBC is so desperate to prop up any successful shows that it will be pimping the hell out of this win. Fox had Idol and 24 and could give a crap. Nice work, Tina Fey lady.
As for the ceremony itself, I don’t mean to sound too out of touch with the way things are going with the FCC and all that, but what was the deal with all the cutting away from the speakers? What ever happened to bleeping? Am I to believe that Sally Field took the stage andsaid “If the mothers ran the country, there’d be one h*ll of a fu*king c*nt sh*t a** mother-fu*king party!!?” It was absurd. Bring back the bleep! Maybe Lewis Black can do an humor-sucking rant about that.

any vote for Shatner, any time, ever, for anything, is an act of baby-boomer self-absortion at its purest.
O’Quinn is so perfect for the John Locke role.
